Of all the concepts set to debut at next month's Geneva Motor Show, the BMW Vision ConnectedDrive roadster is the most compelling. Designed to demonstrate the next generation of integrated infotainment systems, the Vision is more of a rolling showcase of connectivity concepts than something BMW plans to put into production. So with that in mind, let's forget about the styling and acres of LEDs and take a look at what BMW's packed inside.
The most impressive – and potentially production-bound – element is the enhanced heads-up display which provides the usual assortment of driver information, including directions, caller information and entertainment settings. Standard fare, then. Well, not quite. The three-dimensional HUD is overlaid on the windshield and shows icons and route information to let the driver know when to pull off and what services are at the next off-ramp. It's the automotive augmented reality we've all dreamt of and the passenger isn't left out of the fun.
In addition to a customizable screen sitting in front of the driver, the passenger has his own display that integrates with the rest of the vehicle's systems. Through the Passenger Information Display, the co-pilot can control every aspect of the infotainment system along with supplying the driver with updated navigation instructions by sending data directly to the driver's screen. Naturally, all of this is connected to the cloud and BMW's unfortunately-named "Emotional Browser" pulls down data about the vehicle's current location, customizes it to the driver's needs and can display information about where the car is traveling, the traffic situation and what events are happening at the destination. BMW's released a brief video of the Vision ConnectedDrive in action and you can check it out below and get more details in the press release at the bottom of the post.
